The Spine Institute at Baldwin Bone & Joint Welcomes Fellowship-trained Spine Surgeon To Orthopaedic Team

Daphne, Ala. (July 17, 2023) – Baldwin Bone & Joint is pleased to announce the association of Dr. James Hicks, fellowship-trained spine surgeon, to its orthopaedic specialist team. Hicks will join Dr. Charles Gordon, Dr. Elliott Pennington and The Spine Institute team at Baldwin Bone & Joint beginning September 18th.

“As a fellowship-trained spine surgeon, I have spent my professional life focused on complex surgeries while guided by a philosophy of providing excellent, compassionate care to my patients,” Hicks said.

Hicks brings an experienced, committed, and highly trained focus on complex surgeries, including motion preservation surgery, to the orthopaedic practice. As the name suggests, motion preservation surgery refers to surgical methods used in place of conventional spinal fusion that preserve the natural movement of the spine in the affected area.

“My goal is to ensure the optimal health and functionality of the spine utilizing the latest advancements in both non-operative and operative spine care—helping my patients get back to their previous function and quality of life, if not even better,” Hicks said.

Hicks received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Georgia and earned a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia. He completed orthopaedic surgery residency training at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) and Complex and Minimally Invasive Spine Fellowship at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. Additionally, he is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, AO Spine, and North American Spine Society.
